5 Swan Valley wines perfect for winter
8th June 2018
Winter is coming! (yes, even this far beyond the wall). Actually, winter has well and truly arrived here in Perth.
Not only does winter signify cold, rainy, stormy weather, and spending more time indoors, it can also be a great time for sampling new wines.

Whether you’re going to the Swan Valley to cozy up by a fireplace and enjoy a hot winter’s meal with a glass of red, go on one of our wine tours, or simply purchase some quality wine from one of the many wine cellars, the Swan Valley has the perfect wines for you this winter.
Today we share 5 of them with you…
1. Sandalford 2016 Estate Reserve Shiraz
It’s the season for something warm, and red wine and winter go hand in hand.
There really is nothing better than a glass of a full-bodied red wine, particularly when matched with a slow cooked lamb or beef dish.
During the cold climate, a full-bodied Shiraz is perfect – One like the 2016 Sandalford Estate Reserve Shiraz. Velvety soft and supple, like the perfect winter coat, the fruit and oak tannins give this wine a beautiful and complex structure. The finish is rich and lingers with dark berries and mocha accents.
2. Olive Farm Wines 2014 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
Cabernet Sauvignon is another red wine just perfect for the winter months. It’s warming, layered, complex and surprisingly subtle.
One of our favourites is the Olive Farm Wines 2014 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon.
This wine is dark cherry coloured, with deep ruby hues. The palate contains a medley of cherries, licorice, and blackcurrants with smooth supple tannins and is a medium to full bodied red with notes of dark chocolate, cedar, and blueberries.
Decanter, to experience the finesse and elegance this Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon has to offer.
3. Swanbrook 2015 Chardonnay
Just because it’s winter, doesn’t mean you have to drink red wine.
Winter is also the time for a rich, buttery Chardonnay. The Swanbrook 2015 Chardonnay is full-bodied with an intense melon and peach bouquet with overtones of butter and cashew nuts.
For the palate, this wine presents fruit flavours of nectarine, peach and apple and partial maturation on French oak adds vanilla and spice flavours too.
This Chardonnay is a great wine to accompany creamy dishes, such as rich seafood, or a cream-based pasta.
4. Entopia 2016 Vintage Red Port
Whether you love port, hate it or have never tried it, there’s no doubt it’s often seen as a winter drink.
There are a lot of wines to sample this winter, but port is one you’ll likely be reaching for after celebrations, by the fireplace, and on the longest of cold winter nights.
The Entopia 2016 Vintage Red Port is filled with black fruits and licorice flavours and the chalky tannins give the wine a tight but lengthy finish.
5. Mulled Wine
We couldn’t possibly write about winter wines without giving mulled wine a bit of a shout out!
Originating from Rome in the 2nd century, mulled wine gives you something a little bit more warm and fuzzy.
Some Swan Valley wineries even prepare and serve mulled wine throughout the winter months.

Too cold to venture outside? With a few simple ingredients including cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, red wine, and many recipes available online, why not make your own at home?
As you can see, there are many different types of wine for your winter drinking pleasure and Perth’s Swan Valley is home to some of the very best!
So, head to the Swan Valley today – Cozy up by one of the fireplaces and enjoy a hot winter’s meal with a glass of red, book one of our wine tours, or simply purchase some quality wine from one of the many wine cellars.
