Let’s Talk Wine!
The Swan Valley is renowned for its spectacular wines. If you’re new to wine, here’s a breakdown of some but not all the varieties of wine you can expect to sample on tour:
WHITE WINES
Chardonnay: A popular wine in Western Australia, it comes from a very versatile wine grape. The flavour and aroma are influenced easily by its geographical location and how it is made. Fruit flavours can be anything from lime or apple to tropical fruits (in warmer places). Chardonnay is famous for its oaky, buttery flavour when made in oak barrels, but retains more mineral flavours when bailed in stainless steel.
Chenin Blanc: A clean, crisp, slightly sweet wine (renowned in the Swan Valley) that has quince, lime and green apple flavours. Good Chenin has attractive mineral flavours while, with age; Chenin takes on more honey-like flavours.
Sauvignon Blanc: Another fresh, crisp wine, it is highly aromatic with grapefruit and grassy flavours. Originally made famous in France, the new region famous for this wine is New Zealand.
Pinot Gris: This is a richer, spicier wine and is made from grapes that can produce quite different styles of wine, depending on the location and how they are made.
RED WINES
Merlot: This is a soft, fruity wine with blackberry and plum flavours, and occasionally chocolate, mint and eucalyptus aromas and flavours. It is usually ready to drink earlier than other reds that require a few years to mellow.
Cabernet Sauvignon: A bolder red wine, it has more tannin and a greater ageing potential. Flavours include blackcurrants, plums, blackberries and cassis. Cabernet Sauvignon, when aged in oak, can take on flavours of cedar, vanilla, coffee and even chocolate.
Pinot Noir: This wine originated from Burgundy, France and is notoriously difficult to grow. The grape delivers single varietal wines that are considered the best in the world. Pinot Noir is a delicate wine that has the taste of red fruits such as strawberries, raspberries and cherries. As the wine ages, the flavours become more complex, with more earthy notes developing (for which it is renowned) such as mushrooms and decaying leaves.
Shiraz: This red wine is a big spicy wine filled with rich fruity flavours and aromas of leather and black fruit.
